Birmingham Savings Bank
Annual Reports: 1827 - 1863
(continued)
Annual Report - Year Ended November 20th 1838

The extension of the Bank's office in Temple Row has now been completed and includes a "Fire-proof Room". The Auditors suggest that the 62 depositors with balances in excess of £150 would obtain a better rate of interest elsewhere. Reference is again made to accounts that have not been utilised for a number of years, but this year the Auditors merely recommend that the Managers place newspaper advertisements regarding the issue, and the relevant Resolution was passed at the AGM:
Annual Report - Year Ended November 20th 1839

In this year's report, the Auditors draw attention to two contrasting periods of the year: one a period of confidence, the other a period of panic. The amount of interest paid or credited to the depositors amounted to £4,273, and the Auditors express the opinion that this encouragement to saving has prevented "dangerous and tempting inducements to improvidence and intemperance". The Auditors commend the Secretary and Accountant, but only the former (William Bolton) is named in the accounts attached to the report. However, the minutes of the AGM name all the members of the Committee, who include all three Auditors: J W Crompton; J F Ledsam; and PM Twells:

For the first time, the Annual Report lists the names of all the Bank's Trustees and Managers, and additionally details the Committee of Management. This practice is to continue in future reports:
Annual Report - Year Ended November 20th 1841

The Auditors recommend the revision of the Bank's Rule 27 ("Unclaimed Property") previously referred to in 1838, but the Annual General Meeting decides to defer a decision pending a report by the Committee of Management.
